Table runner from Klässbols Linneväveri with Dala horses in navy blue. The Dala horse pattern was born by chance when Jeanette Karsten and her daughter were baking gingerbread cookies. After cutting out several horse shapes, a playful "haphazard" pattern emerged in the dough— a design that became a groundbreaking addition to Swedish textile tradition in 1995.
What makes the pattern unique is that every horse is different, and the irregular placement made it something entirely new on the market. Since then, it has adorned everything from cushions and table runners to towels and fabric by the meter. Originally hand-printed in various colorways, it has also appeared at Svenskt Tenn and Carl Malmsten.
After passing through several Swedish textile workshops, the pattern is now woven at Klässbols Linneväveri, where the original 1995 stencils have been preserved. With its timeless appeal, it remains as beloved today as when it was first introduced.
- Wash linen at 60°C and expect a shrinkage of 5–7%. For tough stains, higher temperatures can be used, but never above 80°C. Soak in lukewarm water for 20–30 minutes before washing to prevent creases. Use color detergent without bleach and treat stains immediately with gall soap or linseed soap. Wash separately in a water-rich program and avoid eco-programs. Spin at low speed (400–800 rpm) and avoid tumble drying. Hang dry in the shade. Iron or mangle linen while damp at high heat.
